Itinerary Overview
Detailed Daily Itinerary with Highlights
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (or Arusha Airport), you will be greeted by your safari vehicle and driver-guide. From Arusha, you’ll transfer to a comfortable mid-range lodge, which will serve as your base and starting point for the safari adventure.
Depending on your arrival time, you may have options to take a short nature walk, visit a local Maasai village, or simply relax at the lodge, enjoying the scenic landscapes and preparing for the journey ahead. In the evening, enjoy dinner under the stars, with views of Arusha Mountain or the lush surroundings. Your guide will provide a briefing on the coming days, including insights on Serengeti migration patterns, crater ecology, and the wildlife you may encounter.
Accommodation: Four Points by Sheraton Arusha
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Begin your day with an early departure from Arusha, heading northwest. Ascend into the Ngorongoro Highlands, an area characterized by lush greenery, small farms, forests, and often mist-shrouded hills. The highlands are an ecological crossroads and serve as a critical water source for the surrounding regions.
As you travel, you’ll pass rolling hills, volcanic soils, and pockets of tropical montane forest. Be on the lookout for diverse birdlife and small primates in these forested areas. By afternoon, you will arrive at Serengeti National Park and experience your first game drive. The Serengeti is famous for its expansive grassland savannas, shaped by volcanic soils and seasonal grazing patterns.
Expect to see large herds of wildebeest and zebra grazing on the plains, along with other grazers like Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, eland, buffalo, and elephants. Predators may also make their appearance—lions resting in the shade, and perhaps a leopard or a spotted hyena on the move.
Afterward, settle into your lodge or tented camp within or near the Serengeti. The nighttime sounds of distant lions, insects, and night birds will accompany your rest.
Accommodation: Kati Kati Tented Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Start with an early morning game drive at dawn, when the savanna teems with life—predators returning from the hunt, early grazers, and the landscape bathed in golden light. If your timing is right, you may witness the Great Migration: immense herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles on the move. Watch for lions resting on kopjes or stalking prey, and look out for cheetahs gracefully navigating the grasses in pursuit of food.
You’ll also have the opportunity to spot smaller species such as Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, eland, waterbuck, and Topi. The landscape features vast undulating plains, with tall grasses during the wet season and shorter volcanic grasslands when it’s dry. Occasional acacia woodlands or umbrella acacias offer shade and serve as vantage points for wildlife.
Return to camp or lodge for lunch and a restful break. Many camps offer lounge areas where you can share stories with fellow travelers or simply enjoy the serene surroundings.
In the evening, set out for another game drive. As the temperature drops, predators often become more active, providing prime opportunities to witness hunts, ambushes, or territorial displays. If permitted by your camp, a night drive may be possible to spot nocturnal animals such as leopards, hyenas, genets, and other small mammals; check with your operator in advance.
Enjoy a magical Serengeti sunset—watch the sky transition to fiery orange hues while sipping a sundowner in the bush.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast and a final early morning drive in the Serengeti, begin your journey back toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The drive takes you through rolling escarpments and volcanic ridgelines, with the option to stop at Olduvai Gorge, known as the “Cradle of Mankind” where significant hominid fossils were discovered. Some itineraries may include a guided walk or visit to the Olduvai Gorge Museum.
Along the way, you may glimpse traditional Maasai villages perched along the highland rim, offering insight into Maasai culture and their harmonious coexistence with local wildlife.
You’ll arrive at your lodge on or near the Ngorongoro Crater rim in the late afternoon. The rim provides breathtaking panoramic views down into the caldera, especially at sunset—a truly mystical sight. Dinner will be served at the lodge, often under lantern light or in a cozy dining tent, as you reflect on the day’s experiences and prepare for tomorrow’s adventure in the crater.
Accommodation: Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Depart at first light and descend about 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater, recognized as one of the world’s natural wonders. The crater floor is a unique ecological microcosm, featuring open grasslands, marshes, the wooded Lerai Forest, and soda lakes. The varied habitats attract a wide range of wildlife: grasses in the plains draw grazers, while the forest offers shelter for elephants and monkeys.
The crater supports up to 25,000 large mammals, with high concentrations of lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, antelope, and, if you are fortunate, the endangered black rhinoceros. Among the predators, you may spot hyenas, leopards, and others. Birdlife abounds as well, with around 500 species recorded in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, including Eurasian migrants, storks, ibises, cranes, and flamingos on the soda lakes.
Most safaris include a picnic lunch on the crater floor (weather permitting), offering a unique dining experience surrounded by wildlife and dramatic scenery. Continue exploring the area, possibly visiting wooded edges, waterholes, or marshy zones where hippos wallow and elephants gather. In the late afternoon, ascend back to the crater rim, marveling at the dynamic colors cast across the crater walls by the setting sun. Enjoy a relaxing evening at your lodge, perhaps with a warm drink on the viewing deck, taking in the serenity of the crater.

Depending on your schedule and energy levels, you may take a brief morning drive along the crater rim, soaking in sunrise views, forested slopes, and sweeping vistas. Begin the journey back to Arusha, passing again through the highlands, Maasai hills, and tranquil landscapes.
You will reach Arusha by afternoon. Based on your onward travel plans, you may either stay overnight in Arusha or transfer directly to the airport. Your guide will bid you farewell, leaving you with stories and photographs to cherish—a memorable conclusion to your African wilderness adventure. The END
