Detailed Itinerary
Your Kenyan adventure begins upon arrival in Nairobi, East Africa’s bustling safari capital. After clearing customs, your safari guide greets you with a warm “Karibu Kenya!” and escorts you to your comfortable city lodge—either the Tamarind Tree Hotel or Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Airport, depending on your arrival time.
Spend the afternoon relaxing after your journey. If time permits, visit nearby attractions such as the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage or the Giraffe Centre, where you can experience the gentle giraffes up close, or simply unwind by the pool with views of the distant Ngong Hills.
The day concludes with a welcoming dinner, giving you a taste of Kenyan hospitality and cuisine—succulent grilled meats, aromatic spices, and tropical fruits—setting the tone for the adventure ahead.
Overnight: Tamarind Tree Hotel
Meal Plan: Dinner
After a hearty breakfast, set out northwest through the scenic Great Rift Valley, enjoying panoramic views of dramatic escarpments, volcanic peaks, and shimmering lakes below.
Upon arrival at Lake Nakuru National Park, you’ll be captivated by the vivid pink hues of flamingos along the soda lake. Despite its compact size, the park is among Kenya’s richest wildlife sanctuaries. During your afternoon game drive, explore acacia woodlands, rocky escarpments, and the lake’s alkaline shores.
Look out for buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffe, impala, and waterbuck. The park’s rhino sanctuary offers a rare chance to observe both black and white rhinos up close. With luck, you may also spot lions and elusive leopards resting in the acacia trees. Bird enthusiasts will delight in the more than 400 recorded species, from pelicans and cormorants to herons and fish eagles.
Return to your lodge as the sun sets, painting the sky in hues of gold and crimson. Enjoy dinner while listening to the distant calls of nightjars and the gentle chorus of frogs from the lake.
Overnight: Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge (or similar midrange lodge)
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, continue your journey southwest toward the famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve, the crown jewel of Kenya’s wildlife conservation. The drive passes through scenic farmlands and rolling highlands before descending into the sweeping savannahs of the Mara.
Arrive in time for lunch at your comfortable lodge, such as Mara Simba Lodge or Zebra Plains Mara Camp, ideally located along the Mara River or within the reserve’s wilderness.
Later in the afternoon, set out on your first game drive in the Mara. The landscape opens into endless golden plains dotted with acacia trees and herds of grazing animals. The Mara is teeming with wildlife—elephants, wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, topis, and gazelles roam freely, while predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards patrol the grasslands.
As dusk settles, the reserve glows with amber light, creating a dreamlike setting for photographers. Return to camp for dinner and perhaps gather around the fire pit to share stories beneath the star-lit African sky.
Overnight: Mara Simba Lodge
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
A full day in the Maasai Mara awaits, offering a true immersion into one of Africa’s most vibrant ecosystems. After an early breakfast, embark on a full-day safari with picnic lunch boxes, venturing deeper into the reserve to witness the incredible rhythms of wildlife.
Depending on the season (July–October), you may witness the awe-inspiring Great Wildebeest Migration, where over a million wildebeests and zebras cross the Mara River in a dramatic struggle for survival. Even outside migration season, the Mara offers exceptional wildlife viewing—elephants traverse the plains, prides of lions rest in the shade, and cheetahs chase after gazelles.
The landscape transitions from vast grasslands to riverine forests along the Mara River, home to hippos basking in the shallows and crocodiles lurking beneath the surface.
In the afternoon, visit a Maasai village to meet proud Maasai warriors and learn about their pastoral traditions, colorful beadwork, and time-honored dances. Return to your lodge as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a fiery glow over the endless plains.
